Taxa |
BioLink uses the Taxon Explorer to graphically manage taxon names, their classification and all information relating to them. The Explorer makes managing complex classifications a simple process. For example, new taxa (at any rank) are added directly to the Explorer in their proper position in the classification. Once entered, a classification is easily modified using "drag and drop". This includes changing rank (for example from subspecies to species), creating synonyms by combining taxa, and changing classification (for example changing generic assignments). In addition, the Taxon Explorer allows taxa to be ordered alphabetically or in a user-specified order.
The Explorer contains a Find facility to locate items anywhere within the Explorer. It also manages Favorites, a facility which enables quick and easy retrieval of commonly used or favorite taxa. These facilities make managing large amounts of data quick and easy.
The Taxon Explorer provides direct access to information relating to taxa (in addition to its classification). This information is retrieved simply by locating an item in the Explorer and using a menu command to retrieve the desired information. There are a range of forms, each specific to the type of data requested. In addition, many reports are generated in a similar manner. For example, the Mapping Assistant can be called directly from the Explorer and loaded with all material records for the selected taxon. The resulting fully customisable distribution map can then be saved to disk, printed or copied to the clipboard. Text-based reports include Sites for a Taxon and Material for a Taxon.
