Fossil Unit Monitoring and Evaluation System (FUMES) A Windows World Open Competition Finalist (Spring'98) This information is presented with permission of the developer The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is a federal corporation, the nation`s largest electricity producer, a regional economic development agency and a steward of the Tennessee River basin. FUMES is a MetaDraw based application in use at all eleven TVA coal-fired plants. Plant process data is collected from a variety of input devices and stored in a common format from site to site. Currently, 14 types of input devices are supported. The FUMES client software provides a GUI interface for view and analysis of the data. Through use of dynamic NFS (Network File System) drive mapping any FUMES client on TVA`s WAN may view real-time or historical data at any site. Six functions are provided for data analysis: X-Y (trend) plots, standard spreadsheet, group (tabular) display, plant mimic, custom spreadsheet, and alarm summary. FUMES has proven itself a valuable tool by enhancing plant performance, reliability, availability and cost reduction. Figure 1: The following is a screen snapshot of a typical "mimic" used by FUMES. The MetaDraw OCX is used in the "Plant Mimic" feature of FUMES.
Figure 2: The followign is a screen snapshot of the Mimic Editor using the MetaDraw OCX to allow users to create their own "Mimics" - graphical representations of plant systems. The editor allows them not only to create the background graphics, but also to assign database points for display at run-time.
